Remi Ayeleso Empowerment Initiative’s Advocacy Program on End Discrimination Against People with Disabilities
On Monday, 7th April 2025, the town of Gwagwalada witnessed a powerful movement for change. The Remi Ayeleso Empowerment Initiative organized a one-day advocacy event with the theme: “End Discrimination Against People with Disabilities.” The event, which commenced at exactly 9:00 a.m., was designed to raise awareness and promote inclusion for people living with disabilities.
The day began with a vibrant sensitization tour across Gwagwalada and neighboring areas. With colorful banners, spirited chants, and inspiring placards, volunteers, persons with disabilities, community leaders, and supporters walked the streets spreading the message of equality, dignity, and acceptance for all.
Back at the School Headquarters in Gwagwalada, where the main event was held, attendees were welcomed into an inclusive atmosphere. The program was formally declared open by the Director of Academics, RAIN-SPEN, Prof. Mary Ayeleso, who emphasized the need for collective action in eliminating discrimination against persons with disabilities.
One of the most touching moments of the day came when the school’s Ambassador and Instructor, Mrs. Ngozi Michael Bassey, shared her personal story. Speaking from her wheelchair, she described how she never allowed her physical disability to stop her from chasing her dreams. Today, she proudly holds a degree in Office and Information Management, a testimony to her unwavering commitment to education and self-belief.
Mrs. Bassey also opened up about the discrimination she once faced in society, until her life took a positive turn when she was employed by RAIN-SPEN, an institution that saw her abilities, not her limitations. “RAIN-SPEN gave me a reason to smile again,” she said with heartfelt gratitude. She encouraged everyone, especially those with disabilities, with powerful words:
“Never allow your disability to be a restriction or limitation to your goals in life.”
The event also featured entertainment, refreshments, and a distribution of mobility aids to support individuals with special needs in their daily lives. The gesture symbolized empowerment, hope, and a shared responsibility to build a more inclusive society.
In his closing address, Mr. Anthony Ayeleso, Director of Administration, thanked all participants, especially the volunteers, for making the event a success. He assured individuals living with disabilities that the Remi Ayeleso Empowerment Initiative is their second home.
“Our door is always open, and we are ready to change the narrative,” he said.
The event ended on a hopeful note, leaving behind a strong, unshakable message: inclusion is not an option, it is a right.
